EO's

Essential Oils (EOs) are naturally occurring oils in plants, barks, flowers, peels, stems, seeds, resin, leaves, and other plant parts. Most essential oils are extracted using a distillation process.

Websites I Love & Trust

www.aromaweb.com – A great aromatherapy resource.

www.everythingessential.me – All things essential oils. This website was started by someone who began using Doterra oils, however this site has grown to be a fabulous resource for all things essential oils. Many different users post on this site. I would recommend using a blending chart when making recipes from this site. They tend to be a little strong.

www.campwander.com – Rebecca at Camp Wander has a wealth of information. I feel like most of her recipes are very strong. Use the blending chart to help when using her recipes. This is where I learned about Spark Naturals.

www.onegoodthingbyjillie.com – Jillie has many great household uses for essential oils. She also happens to be the Camp Wander’s sister.

Essential Oils 101

How Long Have Oils Been Used on People? There are 20 places in scripture that record the use of oil. Keep in mind that the in Biblical times the oil was not infused as the distillation process did not come around until later. The recipe for anointing oil is found in Exodus 30:23-24, it contained myrrh, cinnamon, cassia, and other natural ingredients. Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with perfumed oil as an act of worship. We also know that the Wise Men brought frankincense and myrrh to Jesus. What we do not know is if the gifts of frankincense and myrrh were in oil form or the resin form. However if it was good enough for Jesus, it is good enough for me.

Essential Oils Lingo:

FCO: Fractionated Coconut Oil
NEAT: Apply essential oils without a carrier oil. With the exception of lavender, I do not recommend this method of application.
EO: Essential Oil
Blend: A mix of essential oils, can also include a carrier oil. Read your labels!
Diffusing: Oils placed in a diffuser or other means of experiencing the oils aromatically.
Direct Application: Apply essential oils directly to place of concern. I always recommend using a carrier oil with the exception of lavender unless you understand the effects of the oil. Direct application should not be used on infants, children or the elderly as their skin is more sensitive.
Carrier Oil: Any natural seed or vegetable oil. Some great carrier oils include: Fractionated Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, and Apricot Seed Oil.

How to Use Essential Oils for Your Body & Mind

Inhalation: The Inhalation of essential oils heightens the senses and can trigger numerous desired responses in the body.
~Direct Inhalation – simply smell them.
~Diffuse the oils using a fan or ultrasonic mist diffuser. Please keep in mind, if you heat the oils the oil constituents can be damaged.
~Fill a humidifier with water put 2-3 drops of oil in the inhalation tray. Do not put oil insider your humidifier, it may ruin it.
~Use a bowl filled with hot water, add a few drops of oil. Cover your head and bowl with a towel in a tent like fashion. Breathe deeply and slowly.
~Add 2-3 drops to the bottom of tub or shower when showering.
~Add 2-3 drops to a cotton cloth; stick it in your air vent in the car.
Topical Application: Apply essential oils directly onto the skin with a carrier oil where indicated. For desired therapeutic results, a dilution rate of 12% is considered safe and effective. For massage, and aromatherapy uses a dilution of less than 5% is sufficient. There are some situations where direct application is appropriate including cuts, burns, sores and ulcers. When in doubt dilute! There are many oils that should not be applied NEAT (without a carrier) due to skin irritations, reactions, and burning effects

Areas for Topical Application:
Crown of Head Temples Forehead
Behind Ears Back of Neck Bottoms of Feet
Abdomen Ankles Around Belly Button
Over Vital Organs Sore Muscles
~Never apply essential oils around eyes or apply directly in the ears.~
To apply essential oils topically, follow these simple steps:
~Add carrier oil and essential oils to a roller ball bottle, apply directly as needed.
~Add 2-5ml or ½ -1tsp. of oil to the palm of your hand, tip the bottle to add 2-3 drops of essential oil, rub palms together and apply as necessary
~Add 2-3 drops to a dollop of all natural salve or lotion and apply as necessary.
Easy Salve Recipe
1 c. coconut oil
1c. olive oil
4 ½ Tablespoons Beeswax Pastilles
Melt above ingredients in a double boiler or in a glass jar water bath. Makes about 20 ounces (Thank you Camp Wander for this awesome recipe.) Store salve in a glass jar if storing with essential oils mixed in. Salve can be stored in plastic if storing naked salve.

For 5 ounces
¼ c. coconut oil
¼ c. olive oil
1 heaping Tablespoon Beeswax Pastilles.
Follow above directions. For a stiffer salve, add more beeswax.

Other Beneficial Uses for Essential Oils

Laundry and Cleaning: Essential Oils can be added to homemade cleaning agents, laundry detergent, and stain removers.
Personal Care Products: Essential Oils can be added to personal care products.
Bath: When adding essential oils to a bath; mix with Epsom salt, or all natural bath gel. Add 5-10 drops of essential oil with ¼ cup of Epsom salt or bath gel then add to running water.
Cooking: Essential oils can be used in cooking recipes to add flavor. Due the concentration, it is recommended that the oil is added via a toothpick. Dip your toothpick in the oil, then dip the toothpick in the dish that you are flavoring.
Internally: Many people recommend taking essential oils internally. While I personally do not recommend this (personal exception is lemon in my water), it has been proven to be safe. Please keep in mind not all oils are safe to consume. Also remember that essential oils should always be diluted prior to drinking and/or swallowing.
Other Safety Precautions: Use common sense. Essential Oils should be cared for like any other medication in your home. Do not leave essential oils where children can reach them. Do not use essential oils for a serious medical condition without consulting a health professional. Do not attempt to self-diagnose or prescribe any natural substances for health conditions that require professional attention. Consult a health professional prior to using essential oils if you are pregnant, nursing or plan on becoming pregnant. Do not use wild tansy, clary sage, sage, fennel, wintergreen, or hyssop during pregnancy.

Using and Blending Oils: Through my study of essential oils, I have learned that less is really more. You should start with the weakest blend to get the desired results. If you are not experiencing the desired results, add more essential oil to create a stronger (greater) percentage blend.

How many drops of essential oil in 5ml? Well, it depends on who you ask and how you get your drops.
5ml has about 90 drops using the included reducer
5ml has about 150 drops using a pipette.
Also, the viscosity (thickness) of the oil determines how many drops of oil can fit in a 5ml bottle.

How did my essential oil journey begin…

I began using Tea Tree Oil and Grapefruit Seed Extract in my household cleaning in 2006. This was the year my daughter, Addison was born. I knew that if I could not stand the smell of the cleaning agents I was using, what was it doing to my new baby’s lungs. It never even occurred to me to use it on my body. I ordered my Tea Tree oil from a company in Oregon. It came with a booklet of other possible uses. I dabbled in using the tea tree oil for more than cleaning products. I never really considered any other oils, because I thought they were for perfume or hippies.

Fast forward six years, I was in the hospital for a couple of days after having a hysterectomy. My nurse had asked if I have been up to the bathroom. I explained that I had tried, but could not make myself go after having a catheter. She told me she had a plan and would return in a few minutes. In hospital lingo, that really means 30 minutes or more. The kind lady came in with a medicine cup and a cotton ball that smelled rather minty. The nurse put the cup in my bathroom and told me to sit in there on the toilet and breathe in the peppermint aroma. Low and behold, I was able to go within a couple of minutes. Nurse Peppermint told me that her little trick never failed. It certainly intrigued me, but I did nothing with it for another year.

In the summer of 2013, I was playing Bunco with a bunch of ladies. There was the most intriguing aroma in the home; I thought it was a candle. Then as we changed places, I noticed the aroma was not always around. I then discovered it was a woman who smelled so interesting. I asked her what she was wearing, from there she told me clove, frankincense, sandalwood and orange. She explained why she was wearing the different oils. I left Bunco that night needing to do more research. I stayed up that night until the wee hours of the morning….

After, I received my essential oils, I was feeling skeptical. One morning I was in the kitchen making Malt O Meal for my family. A small amount bubbled out onto my wrist. I could not stop stirring, so I quickly wiped it away. It was stinging like crazy. Once I was finished cooking, I grabbed my Lavender Essential Oil. I put a couple of drops of lavender on the burn area. Within a few seconds, the burning was lessening. By the time we had finished breakfast, my wrist was not burning at all. I added more oil in the day. By that evening, it did not hurt, and there was no blistering. In a few days, my burn was just a small red mark on my wrist. I was sold! No more skepticism.
